Why does the Republic have a trading company if it is so poor?

I was just wondering why they are poor, but they have a trading company and AFAIK, the other two "rich" kingdoms don't, which means they have no competition, and therefore should be earning quite a bit of money.

Kingdom and Tyranny are trading, plus they have very resourceful mines with tons of gold. The republic on the other hand doesn't, they only have 1 mine which doesn't really concentrate in any ore. Also, the trading between tyranny and kingdom won't last long if ash violates the borders which he probably will.
